Springing Forward: Cultivating a Brighter Educational Future for Our Children

As we Spring forward in time and season, I am taking time to reflect on the experiences of the students and the families at Refine KC. Refine KC is a local school in Kansas City that is focused on spiritual development, personalized learning, service, and discipleship, all within a Christ-centered community. As spring draws near, so does the opportunity to make crucial decisions regarding our children's education. I wanted to highlight a few of the various experiences from spending the last year in a Christian education system by sharing with you some parent testimonials.

The first testimonial is from a parent named Angela. Angela said, “School has always been tough for our daughter and she has never enjoyed going. Every day was a struggle getting her there. But after enrolling her at Refine KC this year, for the FIRST time ever, she WANTS to go to school! We are completely amazed at the changes she has experienced. We are so grateful that God has provided a place for her to be able to learn at her own pace and enjoy it.” Making sure that our children have experiences in school that make them WANT to wake up in the morning to go to school is so important. Learning should not feel unattainable or burdensome. This is a great example of how the personalized learning aspect of Refine KC is shaping how students view learning. When students are met wherever they are at in their education by their teachers, they feel seen, capable, and excited to further their education.

Co-founder, principal, and teacher, Matt Barnard, is incredibly passionate about personalized education as he began creating his own personalized learning plan for math classes about a decade ago. He says, “To truly personalize learning, it takes faculty time to pre-assess every student to gauge where they are, especially in reading, writing, and math.  The way our school is set up, we have the flexibility to move students around in classes to make sure every student is properly placed and reaches their own personal level of success. As the year progresses, students may need more or less time to master concepts, which, as a faculty, has us continually evaluating student learning.”

Another testimonial I want to highlight is from parents Will & Amy. They said, “As a family who has moved from public to private Christian education, we wanted a school that would walk beside us in our journey. In just a few months, Refine KC's diligent and caring staff has walked beside our son to help him discover the gaps in his learning and hold him responsible for his part in this change. Moving from traditional public education to Refine KC has helped us understand our role in our children's education.” Some parents are scared to make the leap from either public school or homeschool to private school. It can be daunting as a parent as you just want to do what is best for your children. It seems that Refine KC helps with smooth transitions, no matter your children’s educational background.
